Recycle Gold

Selling or Recycling Your Old Gold

Selling or Recycling Your Old Gold

Many people do not realize that they have a small fortune available to them in their homes – their old jewelry and gold items which are probably gathering dust and do not serve any purpose.  At the same time, many people are increasingly aware of the need to reduce our damage and impact upon the environment – imagine being able to reduce your environmental impact by as much as year’s worth of recycling and getting paid top dollar for doing do!

Gold mining is deeply harmful to the environment.  Tons of earth and rock are required to be removed, massive mining operations use incredible amounts of toxic raw materials in the processing of gold bearing ore, much of which cannot be recycled and pollutes the environment.  Immense amounts of energy are required to fuel all of this and the toll on the environment is enormous.  The gold ring in your jewelry box has probably caused as much environmental damage in its manufacture than you can do driving your car for months!

The cure to the dual need to raise extra funds and to reduce your environmental impact is to sell you old gold items.  By selling gold, it is simply smelted and used to produce “new” gold which will be used in making new jewelry, in electronics, in medicines and dentistry work and a host of other purposes.  By putting your old gold back into circulation, you are directly reducing the need for more mined gold from the earth with an obvious environmental benefit.

At the same time as scoring a huge win on the environmental front, you are also going to be reaping the benefit of a soaring gold price.  Gold is at an all time high (over $1,100) due to the demand for gold caused by the economic recession; the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression of the 1920’s.  In times when the economy takes a downward dive, the price of gold rises because investors turn to gold and precious metals as a safe haven for their capital.  Stocks and shares typically tumble and banks can no longer be trusted with cash, as we have all seen in recent times – the solution is to invest in gold, but this demand forces the price up ever higher.  Conversely, when economic times turn positive again, the price of gold will take a tumble in turn as the metal is sold in order to raise the money to invest back into the stock markets again.

Selling gold at this moment in time represents a very smart move – the price is at an all-time high.  There is a window of opportunity for those looking to sell their old gold because while the economy is looking like it will recover this year, the price of gold has not yet responded by dropping.  It is only a matter of time before the price of gold does drop, so this makes it imperative for sellers to seriously consider making the transaction now.

Selling your old gold brings a double benefit – a high price to produce a windfall for you to clear debts and bills, while at the same time you will be helping the environment.

Recycling Your Old Gold is Environmentally Responsible

Recycling Your Old Gold is Environmentally Responsible

With gold prices riding at all time highs there has never been a better time to look at clearing out your old jewelry and selling.  There are many reasons for doing this – raising some extra cash to pay down expensive credit cards, clear some overdue bills and don’t forget, you are selling at the top of the market right now.
There is another reason which is frequently overlooked by people selling their old gold – it is environmentally very friendly!

Mining gold is a highly polluting activity with a large amount of chemicals involved and highly toxic waste and slurry produced.  The process uses up a great deal of energy as well and this in turn increases the carbon footprint and environmental impact of gold mining operations.

By recycling your old gold pieces you are saving the environment from this highly damaging extraction process.  To refine and reproduce pure gold ingots requires just a fraction of the energy mining raw gold requires.  Refining your old gold also requires far less chemical input, and there are refining systems which are self-contained and emit no toxic byproducts, which themselves can be recycled or safely disposed of.

You can gain some idea of the level of environmental damage which can be saved by simply considering the following:

•    14 tons of earth are required to be moved to obtain 1 ton of gold bearing ore;
•    3 tons of gold bearing ore are required to produce one ounce of pure gold;
•    120,000 liters of water are required to process enough ore to produce one ounce of pure gold and most of the water is heavily polluted after use; and
•    Gold production requires enough energy to power a city block for half a day to produce one ounce of pure gold.

It’s easy to see that gold production is extremely harmful to the earth but when you look at the vastly simplified system for refining existing gold, the environmental damage is negligible.  Refining old gold is simply a process of melting the gold and separating it from any other metals included with the gold.  After several refining processes, which consume a fraction of the energy to produce gold from a mine, the “old” gold is now “new” gold and ready for distribution, either to a bank vault as part of a gold reserve, or for use in medical procedures, electronic components and of course, for making new jewelry.

While the bulk of the gold that exists is still yet to be mined from the earth, demand for gold is at an all time high which has not only increased the price, but increased the mining effort.  Gold mining companies have not suffered from the recession and have stepped up production to take advantage of the existing pricing levels and almost insatiable demand.  Until gold prices return to lower pricing levels, gold mining companies will continue to operate extremely damaging extraction processes – you as a seller can benefit from the current record high prices, however by selling your old items you are actually saving the planet from deeply damaging mining operations.

Why Selling Your Old Gold is Good for the Environment

Why Selling Your Old Gold is Good for the Environment

Gold mining operations create a great deal of pollution and are highly detrimental to the environment. Millions of tons are moved and treated each year to get at the gold-bearing ore, and billions of gallons of highly polluted water is used in the process which is contaminated with acids, cyanide and a host of other toxic compounds.

Throughout history, the amount of earth which has been mined is in the billions of tons and the environmental damage is unimaginable!

For all that effort you are going to be surprised at just how little gold has actually been obtained – if you gathered all the gold in the world together in one place, you would have a cube roughly 70 feet square.

Barely enough to fit inside a modest sized house!

The bulk of gold mining has been performed since the start of the 20th Century; sure there have been the famous gold discoveries in California sparking the Gold Rush period, the gold of the Incas and Mayans as well as cultures such as the Ancient Greeks, but the vast majority of the mining and pollution has taken place in our modern time.

To extract one ounce of gold from the earth requires a huge amount of energy and a huge amount of processing, and yet so much gold is present in jewelry boxes shut away in people’s homes!

It is much easier and simpler to take existing gold, whether it be old jewelry or recycled from other sources, and convert that back into usable, “new” gold. So simple and energy efficient is the process, that many jewelers are able to perform the operation on their premises. The environment is therefore spared the ravages of mining and the consequent pollution which results from the operation.

It makes financial sense too. Gold prices are at record highs because of the demand for the metal by governments and financial institutions turning to gold when economic times are hard. Currently, gold is at an all time high, hitting over $1,000 an ounce earlier this year, and this is because we are in the middle of the worst recession for over 60 years. This means that now is the best time to sell your gold because when the economic recovery gets underway, the relative price of gold will fall as investors and governments no longer need to bolster their reserves and look to move back into the stock markets.

Selling your gold is easy and simple.

There are numerous companies who actively promote their services for buying old gold and jewelry items. One tip is to deal with a gold refiner because they are the ones who will actually smelt the gold back into its pure state for use in the wholesale market – you will get the best price from them. You need to take a little time to make sure you are comfortable with doing this and ensuring you are dealing with a reputable company, but that is easy enough to do with the internet these days. Selling your old gold items is good for your bank balance and good for the environment, so don’t forget to turn your gold green when you are looking to sell.
